Sense of Fashion & Style: 'Runway' winner to host local event Barbara Bradley

By Barbara Bradle

Talented folks of the Mid-South have been making their mark in fashion recently, and some plan to make their way to Memphis from Friday through Sunday at the debut of MidSouth Fashion Week.
The event at Memphis Cook Convention Center will be hosted by Krista White, 26, of Pine Bluff, Ark., the most recent winner of CW television's "America's Next Top Model." White will walk the runway and introduce segments of the show.

It will feature the work of three popular designers from "Project Runway," (formerly on Bravo and now on Lifetime Television) including Korto Momolu of Little Rock, who was among the designers chosen to show their collections at Bryant Park for New York Fashion Week. Also showing will be Jerell Scott and Gordana Gelhausen.
The week will open Friday night with a meet-and-greet with White, Scott, Gelhausen and others. On Saturday, the three will participate in two seminars on the fashion business and on reality TV and auditioning.
A show with local and regional boutiques and designers will be Saturday night, and the celebrity designer show will be Sunday night. Ticket prices are $20 (in advance) for the reception; $30 online for each seminar; $35, standing, for the local show and $50, standing, for the celebrity show.
Momolu will attend only the Sunday event because she is showing her collection Saturday at Boston Fashion Week.
MidSouth Fashion Week is being organized by Jackie Thomas, owner of Lauderdale Media in San Diego. Thomas is a Memphis native who named her company after the Memphis street. Thomas represents Momolu and Gelhausen, and has helped produce shows for New York Fashion Week, and for national radio personality Tom Joyner and his Fantastic Voyage and Family Reunion. She recently served as a consultant for the upcoming launch of New England Fashion Week in June 2011. Thomas figured if she could help launch such an event there, she could do her own event in her hometown.
Momolu, whose line of purses and jewelry is sold at Dillard's, will bring her spring 2011 collection Sunday. She showed it recently at New York Fashion Week. Her day dresses run about $130 to $300. Her evening wear, depending on the detail and beading, can run as high as $1,500. "I've done three or four shows in Memphis," she said. "It's close to home, and they've received me very well."
Local stores, designers and others participating in the show include Sache T-shirt shop, Main Event Boutique, Linda Parker, Jacqueline Cole and Kingsbury Career Technology Center.
MidSouth Fashion Week should not be confused with Fashion Week Memphis, formerly Urban Fashion Week, which showcases Memphis designers. This will be held Oct. 14-17 with a fashion show Oct. 17 at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts. Details will be available soon at the new website.

Overcoming Abuse
Also in the October lineup is Overcoming Abuse, a fashion show and silent auction in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. It will be 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 17 at The Peabody and will feature clothes from Dillard's, cosmetics from Mary Kay and an address by Michael W. Orr, chief inspector, U.S. Marshals Service. It will be produced by GlobalGOGirl Ministries. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased by calling 605-8087 or (662) -349-1369.
