Kate Middleton--took the beauty world by surprise a few months ago when the news broke that she would do her own makeup for her and-Prince William's Royal Wedding. It was a fearless move from the Duchess to be, as the ceremony was not only one of the biggest days of her life, but also one of the most photographed and watched events of all time with about 1,900 guests and an-estimated 2 billion viewers.

Now she's a beauty risk taker if there ever was one! But her willingness to play makeup artist also further demonstrated her practical and accessible-nature.

Royal Wedding Celebrated by DBE at a Royal Luncheon

If you were wondering if the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, now the Duke and Dutchess of Cambridge, was not getting enough attention locally, not to worry. Victoria Crosby, NY State Daughters of the British Empire President; and DBE National Poet Laureate; and Regent, Westminster Abbey Chapter hosted a luncheon at her home on Thursday, April 28 for the local chapter of the DBE.

With its usual inclusiveness the Daughters of the British Empire in the State of New York welcomes members stating, “If you are female and of British or Commonwealth Ancestry or married to someone of British or Commonwealth Ancestry you are welcome to apply for membership.”

Their mission is to support Victoria Home in upstate NY, a state-certified, not-for-profit skilled nursing facility that accommodates 49 full-time male and female residents, of all races, colors and creeds and was founded in 1916 by the Daughters of the British Empire (DBE) in the Eastern District of the United States.

"Kate's makeup was beautiful and elegant with a pop of color," Lucinda Barreto, makeup artist at Nars, says. "It's a look that can be worn for everyday or a special occasion."

To recreate Kate's wedding makeup look, Barreto recommends the following: for the face, use the brand's Copacabana Illuminator as a foundation for the skin, Laguna Bronzing Powder for a healthy glow, and Deep Throat Blush on your cheekbones.

Wedding fashion to be royally inspired

Designers are racing to create gowns that look like Kate Middleton's many at a fraction of the cost.

CHICAGO  When Kate Middleton walked down the aisle Friday and unveiled her regal gown designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen  the most closely held secret in royal apparel in decades  hundreds, maybe even thousands, of designers put pencil-to-sketch pad in the race to be the first to create the next big trend in wedding attire.

Within weeks, brides-to-be will be able to choose from look-alike frocks at a variety of price points. Middleton's look will be seen in one variation or another at many altars for years to come.

"Whatever she wears will have a lasting influence," said Dan Rentillo, design director for David's Bridal. "My big challenge is how we are going to interpret it."

For months, designers have been debating how Middleton would make her wedding-day fashion mark as she married Prince William in Westminster Abbey. Rentillo's team, like many designers across the world, sketched designs weeks ago illustrating what they thought Middleton might wear, based on her sense of fashion, body type and what an event of such magnitude would dictate.

The wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton has been the only thing I have watched on the TV today. It was held at Westminster Abbey in London, England. I woke up this morning and watched the guests arriving, I watched the ceremony, the horse and carriage ride, the balcony appearance and everything else.

The day was just so beautiful and so moving! Kate’s dress was as I expected, an Alexander McQueen creation designed by Sarah Burton. It was simply stunning and I love the lace on the top half. William looked very handsome and smart in his royal suit as well. The kiss on the balcony was my favourite part, it was so romantic and I am wishing the couple happiness for the rest of their lives. The horse and carriage ride was also amazing and it just choked me up when I heard everyone cheering for them. I even loved the Aston Martin that Kate, now Princess Catherine, and William decorated with balloons as he drove them both off.

From his Manhattan studio, designer Oscar de la Renta stated, “Catherine Middleton was wearing what she was supposed to wear: traditional and not ostentatious or over embroidered or over-anything” It was, he added, “a pretty dress, beautifully executed. Discreet and elegant.” It may have been safe. But, he says, “it was exactly right.”

Middleton contacted Burton several months ago to commission the gown. Word leaked out in February, but Burton repeatedly denied it to help Middleton keep all details about the dress a secret from William. Together, Burton and Middleton came up with a gown with classic lines: a long-sleeved, lace bodice over an ivory and white satin gazar corset and full skirt that the palace press office described as “in the shape of an opening flower.” Much of the lace was made by the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace. The hips were padded and the silhouette was based on Victorian corsetry, both McQueen signature elements. 

Kate's DIY Makeup: Did She Do a Good Job?

Kate Middleton's won major kudos for her Alexander McQueen by Sarah Burton wedding dress a "flawless success" gushed the New York Times but the verdict's still out on her makeup. 

In keeping with her populist approach to the special occasion, the bride insisted on doing her own face. "Daring considering all the portraits she'll be taking. I think it's kinda cool," tweeted Giuliana Rancic from London, where she was covering the royal nuptials for E! News.

"Kate allegedly did her own make-up because she wanted to William to recognize her when she walked down the aisle," expounded Fashion Police host George Kotsiopoulos. "Um, who else would be in a big white gown and a veil?! She looks absolutely beautiful but less or no liner under her eye would have given a much cleaner look."

Kate Middleton showed off her expert bridal beauty training from makeup artist Arabella Preston on her royal wedding day. And while it isn't a drastic departure from her normal makeup routine, the newly appointed Duchess of Cambridge donned some serious smoky eye makeup.

With her brunette locks styled half-up, half-down in long, soft curls and dressed in a Cartier tiara borrowed from the Queen, Kate's elegant beauty -- bold brows, heavily-lined lids, rosy cheeks and pink lips -- made quite the statement.
