Passion is an auspicious thing. It is a little ball that sets alight when fuelled by motivated individuals. Roderick Ng met up with Anna Hookway to find out what drives her and her jewellery design boutique, Anna’s Design (www.annadesign.com.au).
Confident and effervescent Hookway is beautiful. She commands attention the moment she walks into the room. Having been in the fashion business for six years, she is true to her brand’s unique and individualistic concept, designing and sourcing her jewellery and jewellery parts on her travels across the globe. She shares with me that through repeated practice, she has developed a system that works for her. Fashion is a business like any other. With an established system that works the business is able to be creative and flourish.
“I definitely learned to be more confident in what I do”, she went on to elaborate. When I asked her about unexpected challenges in her work, she said, “While I find my work interesting, there is some theft in the shop”.
Even the smallest amount of theft in the biggest store would make you feel a pinch. Individual theft is not only costly for the proprietor, it is also disheartening when your designs are being stolen. She concludes, “That is not easy, and you always have to be on your toes.”
Her stylish and eclectic mix of themes create a playground for jewellery enthusiasts from all walks of life.
“Our clientele varies from little kids getting birthday pressies to groovy grannies buying a necklace for themselves.”
Never one to count the hours she has worked, like so many Australian small business owners,Hookway is inspired to continue her jewellery business.
“I love what I do”, Hookway expressed.
From humble beginnings to a glamorous fashion jewellery boutique, Hookway is candid about the birth of her store.
“At first I opened a very little hole in the wall shop and that went well so I decided to open a bigger shop with more WOW factor.”
The future is colourful for Anna Design’s as Hookway plans to open more stores.
